STAMPED "W. H. LEHEW & CO / STRASBURG, VA", SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA STONEWARE JARS, LOT OF TWO, salt-glazed, each of cylindrical form with squared rim, comprising a "2" gallon capacity mark example and a "1 1/2" gallon capacity mark example. Each having brushed cobalt decorations including one example with dropped tassel design repeated four times from neck and remaining with simple flower design repeated three times. The pottery of William H. Lehew (b. c. 1825-aft. 1891), Strasburg, VA. Circa 1870. 9 5/8" H, 7 5/8" D rim and 12 1/2" H, 7 7/8" D rim.Literature: Stamps as Comstock - Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley Region, p. 295, figs. 5.263 and 5.265.Condition "1 1/2" gallon example having a few minor rim chips; "2" gallon example having some scattered rim chips, mostly minor, and a hairline extending approximately 4 1/2" up side.
