VIRGINIA MERCHANT'S STENCILED STONEWARE JAR, salt-glazed, designated "1 1/2" capacity, cylindrical form with slight shoulder, flat-top rounded rim, Albany-slip glazed interior. Stenciled cobalt "Wm. Kinnier & Co. / Lynchburg, Va." Circa 1875. 10 1/2" HOA.Catalogue Note: William Kinnier was born in 1836 in Drollaugh, Ireland and immigrated to the United States with his parents sometime around 1850. William first entered the grocery business working for his father. In 1860, James Kinnier is listed as a "grocer" and William, then 23, was listed as a "clerk". The outbreak of the Civil War disrupted William's grocery career; he was drafted into the Confederate cavalry in February 1864. After the war, Kinnier most likely reentered the merchant business. In the 1870 census, he was recorded as "Keepe Chine Store" and in 1880 he was recorded as a "Crockery Merchant". William Kinnier died in 1899 and is buried among family in Presbyterian Cemetery in Lynchburg.Condition Undamaged, except having some glaze exfoliation below stencil.
