VIRGINIA MERCHANT'S STENCILED STONEWARE JAR, salt-glazed, designated one-gallon capacity, cylindrical form with slight shoulder, flat-top rounded rim with beaded neck, Albany-slip glazed interior. Stenciled cobalt "I. H. PLECKER / STAUNTON, VA.", additional decorative leaf stencils flanking "1" gallon capacity. Circa 1875. 10 1/8" H, 6 3/8" D rim.Catalogue Note: Jacob Howard Plecker was born in Augusta County in 1820. During the Civil War, he served in the Confederate Army in the 62nd Regiment, Virginia Mounted Infantry. Plecker was listed on the 1860 and 1870 census records as a "merchant". He died in 1890 and was buried in Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton.Condition Mostly undamaged, having a minor chip to rim interior.
