VIRGINIA MERCHANT'S STENCILED STONEWARE JARS, LOT OF TWO, each salt-glazed, of cylindrical form with slight shoulder and rounded flat-top rim, Albany-slip glazed interior, comprising a designated "1 1/2" gallon capacity example and an approximately half-gallon capacity example. Each having stenciled cobalt "E.J. MILLER & SON. / DEALERS IN / CHINA AND / GLASS WARE. / ALEXANDRIA, VA." and one with additional brushed cobalt "1 1/2" capacity with three bands and a wavy line decoration. James Hamilton, Greensboro, PA for Elisha Janney Miller (1827-1895), Alexandria, VA. Circa 1888. 7 1/2" H, 4 3/4" D rim and 10 3/4" H, 6 7/8" D rim.Catalogue Note: Elisha Janney Miller was born into an Alexandria, VA merchant family. His grandfather, Mordecai Miller, and father, Robert Hartshorne Miller (1798-1874) were each prosperous importers and wholesalers. Elisha began working with his father in 1856 at his No. 65 King Street establishment and nine years later, he inherited the business after his father's retirement. At this time, Elisha entered into a business partnership with the Milburn family pottery on Wilkes Street. The pottery provided the merchant with assorted stoneware forms including jars, cuspidors/spittoons, jugs, milk pans, and cake crocks until its closing in 1876.
