ROCKINGHAM GLAZE POTTERY LARGE-SIZED FIGURAL DOG / SPANIEL, mottled brown glaze, having lead- and manganese-based glazes over a buff stoneware clay, molded in the form of a left-facing Staffordshire-style spaniel with intricately detailed molded fur and facial features, large locket, separately molded and applied solid tail, and free-standing front legs. North American or British. Mid to late 19th century. 11 7/8" H, 9" WOA.Catalogue Note: The free standing front legs are an extra level of detail not usually seen on Staffordshire style spaniels, and coupled with the relatively thin-walled hollow body, suggest this oversized dog was intended as a mantle piece or decorative statue rather than the more typical "hall dog" life as a doorstop.Condition Excellent condition with a few old shallow chips around lower edge of body and tail, and a couple other scattered flakes to the glaze including a small area at the topmost extremity of the head.
