WEST VIRGINIA MERCHANT'S STENCILED STONEWARE JUG, salt-glazed, approximately one-gallon capacity, semi-ovoid form with ringed mouth and applied strap handle. Stenciled cobalt "PETER WELTY & CO. / WHOLESALE LIQUORS / 1118 MAIN / & 1121 MARKET / STREETS / WHEELING, W. VA". Circa 1885. 11 1/2" HOA.Catalogue Note: Peter Welty was born in 1836 in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. First immigrating to Maryland in the 1850s, Welty initially worked as a stonemason. He moved to Wheeling in 1862 and entered the wholesale liquor business with his brother, Christian Welty, the firm then called "C. Welty & Bro." After the death of his brother in 1870, the firm became known as "P. Welty & Co." Welty was involved in a number of ventures in Wheeling including serving as the director the Schmulbach Brewery at the time of his death. He died in 1894 and is buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Wheeling. P. Welty & Co. continued after his passing and in 1914 relocated to Pittsburgh, PA.
