Vintage Vaudeville / Theater PhotoJoe Laurie, Jr.Photo is about 7" x 9". Photo has pinholes in around the four corners w it was tacked to a wall and some wear as well as something that appears to have been spilled on the left side (see photo below). About Don Austin & these Auctions These photos, art pieces, and memorabilia are from the collection of Don Austin. Don Austin was born June 30, 1888 in Nugents Grove , Iowa and studied Art at the Chicago Art Institute. In 1915 he created one of the first animated cartoons ever made, a series called "Rastus and his Adventures". He also worked on a number of other early cartoon shorts.Don Austin entered the army in May 1917, fought in World War I in France and served during the Armistice in Germany . He was wounded during riots in Coblenz and during his time in the hospital he was offered the opportunity of animating "The Gumps" by their creator Sidney Smith. He drew the cartoons for several years until Sidney Smith died and the series was discontinued.He worked in vaudeville for a time, showing his cartoons throughout the United States
