AMERICAN STONEWARE MINIATURE SCRATCH ADVERTISING JUGS, LOT OF FOUR, Albany-slip glazed, comprising a Georgia example having "Old / Gum Spring / BH Jassey / Salt Agent / Americus Ga" to front, two Kentucky examples including one having "Compliments of / Hirsch Bros & Co / Manfrs of / Cider & Vinegars / Louisville Ky." and one with "Jos L Friedman & Co / Paducah Ky / Vinegars", and one having "Compliments of / J R Lloyd / 7103 / Penn Ave", possibly Washington DC. Late 19th/early 20th century. 3 1/4" HOA. Catalogue Note: Joseph Friedman was born in Louisville, KY in 1857. Friedman became a successful businessman and was most widely known as one part of the Friedman, Keiler & Company, whiskey "rectifiers" and wholesalers. Prior to the liquor business, Friedman had founded his own vinegar business in Paducah, which he sold in 1890. Friedman died suddenly at the age of 56 in 1913. At the time of his death, it was recorded he was the most wealthy man in the Paducah. Hirsch Brothers & Co. Cider and Vinegar Works was founded in 1886 in Louisville, KY. The company first began as a vinegar only business but quickly expanded into cider and foods such as pickles, sauerkraut, mincemeat, and apple butter.
