VICTORIAN RISQUE NUDE HIDDEN IMAGE POCKET MIRRORS, LOT OF THREE, round tin/pewter frames embossed at outer edge with variations of "HOWE'S PAT APP'D FOR / OUT OF SIGHT" and "TRANSPARENT MIRROR CO. CHICAGO / PATENTED / HOWE", each with glass panes housing two-sided mirrored surfaces; brightly lighting these from behind reveals sepia toned images of fully nude women including a pair inscribed "VENUS" at the bottom, a duo of nymphs dancing, and a trio of women just palling around. The Transparent Mirror Co., Chicago, IL. Circa 1900. 1 7/8" DOA.Catalogue Note: We could discover very little information about these cheeky, gimmicky stanhope-related mirrors besides a brief advertisement in a September 1899 Midwestern newspaper giving the company's address as 80 W. Randolph St. in Chicago. Condition Excellent condition, one with some minor losses to plating of metal frame, a bit of discoloration or smudges to some areas of the images; a couple shallow flakes or chips to glass panes, likely as made.
