On June 25, 1876, Tatanka Iyotanka - as he was known in his native tongue - led thousands of warriors from different tribes to an overwhelming victory over General George Custer and his troops at the Battle of Little Big Horn. Years later, Sitting Bull became world-famous as a main attraction in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show. The aging chief later left the show to resume leadership of his people in South Dakota. Sitting Bull died in 1890 from a gunshot wound he suffered during a clash between tribe members and tribal police who were sent to arrest him.
