French Childs Blue Transferware Toy PlatePOLICHINELLEKeller & GuerinLuneville, France 1890This is whimsical childs toy dollhouse transferware plate, originally part of a complete miniature doll's dinner and tea service. A nice doll size, the plate measures 4-1/2 inches across.The piece is transfer printed in soft country blue against a creamy earthenware blank, imaginatively decorated with a dandy gentleman chatting with a floozy dancer. These amusing characters are eadapted from the art of Grandeville, a satirical comic artist. The pattern name is "Polichinelle", the French name for the the original Punch and Judy puppet show.Th e plate is an uncommon example of 19th Century miniature dollhouse French transferware. Much like the transfer printed childrens wares from Staffordshire England. Unm arked, made by Keller & Guerin, one of the faienceries in the Luneville region of France c1890. The pattern is illustrated in the book 'Dinette francaises en faience'.The plate is in great condition with some under glaze crizzling on the edge at 2 o'clock but no chips cracks or repairs. Glaze crazing and other minor typical transfer imperfections adding to the authenticity and charm of this petite dish. Sold as is.Children's early transfer printed wares of this quality from France are quite scarce and highly sought after with captivating imagery. read more
