Antique Child's Blue Transferware Toy Plate POLICHINELLE~ COMMEDIA DEL’ARTE Keller & Guerin Luneville, France 1880 This whimsical toy transferware dish was originally part of a complete miniature doll's dinner service. The tiny plate measures 4" in diameter. Transfer printed in bright sky blue with a light blue tinged pearlware glaze, the plate is imaginatively decorated with 3 winsome comical scenes and images from age old nursery tales: a gnome playing with a dog; a boy reading an ABC book to his pet Newfoundland dog; and Little Red Riding Hood meeting the wolf in the forest. The characters are representative of the Commedia del'Arte, an Italian troupe of actors, dancers and comedians, all the rage of Paris in the late 17th century, presenting satirical and risque comedies and improvisations to delighted crowds. The pattern name is "Polichinelle", the French name for the main character of Pulcinella, the original Punch and Judy puppet show. The plate is an uncommon piece of 19th Century French Transferware. Much like the transfer printed miniature wares from Staffordshire England, this piece was made by Keller & Guerin one of the faienceries in the Luneville region of France c1890.
