This is an original 1880s white-metal souvenir medal, probably issued circa 1889 to coincide with the centennial of George Washington's inaugural. The 26mm medal has on one side a profile portrait of Washington with "INAUGURATED NEW YORK APRIL 30 1789" around. On the other side is the Brooklyn Bridge and East River boat traffic. At top is "NEW YORK - BROOKLYN / PROGRESS OF / 100 YEARS". At bottom is "THE EIGHTH / WONDER". The Bridge side carries the legend "G.B. SOLEY PHIL." Soey was once an engraver for the U.S. Mint The medal is attached by what I assume is its original tattered red ribbon to a bronze hatchet pin embossed with "I CANNOT TELL A LIE". The medal is bright and exhibits considerable original luster; well preserved for its 125+ years on this earth. Please see the enlargeable scans to judge condition for yourself. Because the medal/ribbon/pin does not la flat on the scanner, I have added scans of another example of the medal to show the obverse and reverse details. The sample medal is not included in this auction. This is part of a collection of Brooklyn Bridge medals, tokens, memorabilia and ephemera that I assembled 30-40 years ago.
