1722 Rosa Americana Halfpenny, the popular D:G: REX variety. Martin 2.1-B.1. Rarity-3 [per Martin, likely a little more difficult to find than that]. Very Fine, a well-struck circulated example, the legends all there and mostly bold, the date sharp, and the design details as expected for the grade, the King’s face with strong features, the hair showing even wear, the rose at the center of the reverse showing all the pellets within. Nice, fully original Bath Metal color, the attractive yellow hue different from anything else in circulation at the time. The surfaces are hard, with some light parallel scratches at the lower left reverse that appear to be adjustment marks. Always a popular issue, the only Rosa Americana obverse with the obverse legend abbreviated in this manner (and with a similar obverse found on the Hibernia farthing coinage as well), and the reverse is the only one with this legend and no ornamentation in the legend. Walter Breen called this a pattern or a prototype, but that does not appear to be correct as there are far more known than one would expect for a pattern and they generally come in well-circulated condition.
