Ynez Johnston born 1920California "Tartessus XIV" circa 1962 color woodcut pencil signed and lower right margin pencil titled lower center margin pencil edition numbered 1 of 2 lower left margin image size: 18 inches tall by 11.5 inches wide overall frame size: 24 inches tall by 18 inches wide hinged in archival museum board mat (not glued down) violet-color metal frame with plexiglass DESCRIPTION: Very cool abstract multi-color woodcut by the popular Los Angeles artist Ynez Johnston. It is printed on very thin Japan paper and signed, titled, and numbered by the artist. This one was done in a very small edition of only two prints in this color combination. Ynez Johnston made other small editions of this print using different color combinations and different types of paper, one of which is in the Norton Simon Museum. There is an old label from one of the La Cienega Boulevard galleries in Los Angeles attached to the back, with the artist attribution, saved from an earlier frame. CONDITION: Excellent impression on thin Japan paper, however, there are scattered holes in the paper mostly in the lower right margin, but not in the image itself. It is mounted in an archival 100% cotton museum board mat (not glued down), in a thin violet-color medal frame under plexiglass. Very minor scratches on the frame.
