WOMENS INSTITUTE - LAPEL BADGE - WEST MIDLANDS FEDERATION. 1897 when Adelaide Hoodless addressed a meeting for the wives of members of the Farmers' Institute. The first Women's Institute was formed in Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada, in 1897. At first it was set up as a branch of the Farmer's Institute inspired by a talk given by Adelaide Hoodless. Erland Lee, a local farmer and his wife Janet Lee were instrumental in setting up the new organisation, supported by the Ontario Government which appointed Laura Rose to be the first organiser in 1899.The WI in Britain was formed under the auspices of the Agricultural Organisation Society (AOS). The AOS Secretary, John Nugent Harris, appointed a Canadian, Madge Watt, to set up the WI. The first British WI meeting took place on 16 September 1915 at ( Llanfair PG for short ) on Anglesey in North Wales. The WI was originally set up in the UK to revitalise rural communities and to encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War.In 1917 The first federation was formed when neighbouring WI’s in Sussex decided to meet together Although the Board of Agriculture continued to fund the formation of WIs, the organisation became independent in its own right. The National Federation of Women's Institutes was formed on 16 October 1917, involving the adoption of rules and the election of an Executive Committee. On offer base metal and enamel lapel badge. Size: A little over 1.1/4 inches ( 33mm ) in diameter. Brooch pin and C clip fastener. It also has a safety clasp incorporate, for greater security when being worn. All in correct working condition. All enamel intact. No dents or scatches to metal work. The one being sold is maintained in its original packaging. Very nice badge. Overall in very good used condition.
