Woburn Buildings, W.C., 1917 April 7. To " Dear Mr. Duncan ". In full: " I enclose paper proof of Pamphlets which please let me have back as soon as possible. Printer is very slow now & I would like to have it out soon after the Easter holiday. Your committee asked to see it but I hope it will not be necessary & delay it. [word crossed out] Would you mind correcting the names [illegible] the [illegible] memorial. The printer has guessed [illegible]. I am afraid my letter yesterday may have sounded unsympathetic. I think your Dave much excellent but I must personally be very careful while I am in negotiation. Is Oct 1915 right re your appointment as curator. Please put it right or wrong. " Handwritten postscript: " If I go to Dublin you may have to fill in at [illegible] as I am getting a book ready, [cross out] [one line illegible]. Your committee may know of one. It will be all right if Mrs. Byrne is fine. I shall write to her. " In the year of this letter, William Butler Yeats (1865-1939), one of the world's greatest lyric poets, published "At the Hawks Well" and had one of his poems, "To the Secret Rose", published in The Oxford Book of English Mystical Verse . In 1917, Yeats also purchased and began restoring Thoor Ballyle, a direlect Norman stone tower near Coole Park, that became his summer home -- and a central symbol in his later poetry -- and married Georgie Hyde-Lee. Yeats, who was awarded the 1923 Nobel Prize in Literature for his poems, was also a playwright. He had been a co-founder of the Irish Literary Theatre in Dublin (their first production, in 1899, was Yeats' The Countess Cathleen , written from 1889-1892). Ink notes (unknown hand) at upper left margin. Lightly creased with folds, light horizontal fold at signature. Ink smudged at some words (all legible), slightly soiled at blank areas.
