Vintage Town Rossi Aluminum Pine Tray circa 1946 HTFVintage Town Rossi Aluminum Pine Tray circa 1946 HTFExtremely scarce circa 1946 vintage hand-hammered aluminum tray made by Eugene Town, using a Pine respoussé motif die engraved by Natale Rossi, before Frank Rossi joined him in the business. The die was engraved specifically for coasters, and Town used the die to embellish this tray in the four corners. The piece measures 9-1/8" by 14-1/8" (17-1/4" including the self-handles), and is marked "Hand Made Aluminum, By Town."I have several aluminum pieces from the same collector, with more to come, from an extensive collection that includes quality vintage work by Wendell August, Palmer-Smith, Town, James DePonceau, Arthur Armour, Laird, Cellini-Craft, Sheasley and many others. Most of these artisans were connected with Wendell August in some way. The majority all in fabulous condition. I invite you to sign up for my seller newsletter, through the button in this auction, to be kept informed.Town History: Hand-hammered aluminum items marked TOWN were created from early 1946 through 1949, primarily in the San Gabriel Valley of Southern California. The line was started by Eugene and Josephine (Rossi) Town, using two dies engraved by Jo's brother, Natale Rossi, who by then was the chief die engraver for the Wendell August Forge. In 1947 , they were joined by Jo's brother, Frank, and his wife Lenora (Isacco) Rossi. Both Gene and Frank had been trained as craftsmen at the Wendell August Forge in the 1930s, and their skills are evident in the fine quality of the Town items they produced. As the line expanded, Gene began engraving additional dies, of which 36 have thus far been identified. In 1949, due to expanding Korean War military aircraft production in Southern California, aluminum supplies became exceedingly sparse for small buyers, and Gene and Frank were no longer able to sustain the production of the line.
