This is a pretty two-piece set of 9-inch luncheon plates that were produced in the 1930's by the American ceramics manufacturer, Homer Laughlin China Company, located in Newell, West Virginia. Each plate features a lovely pattern that is identified by several different names that include Poppy and Rose, Olivia and Ivora. This pattern was first introduced in the 1930's and continued production into the 1950's. Each plate features an ivory-colored background beautifully decorated with three floral sprays that consist of yellow roses, orange poppies and green, black and yellow leaves. Both plates are marked on the base with the company's green ink stamp along with several letters/numbers. These letter/number combinations were part of a unique date code system developed by the Homer Laughlin China Company. One plate displays the following combination, "A 34 N 7", which indicates this piece was made in January 1934 at the Newell Plant #7. The other plate displays the following combination, "C 37 N 5", indicating this piece was made in March 1937 at the Newell Plant #5. Despite some manufacturing flaws, crazing and minor scuff/scratches and water marks, these vintage plates are in very good condition with no chips, cracks or any evidence of damage.
