Vintage Appalachian Splint Oak Buttocks / Melon Basket

Up for auction is a nice medium sized, vintage, woven splint oak buttocks or melon basket made by a talented weaver from the Appalachian mountains of the Southern US. It would have been intended for use as a berry basket or egg basket, and is woven in a classic shape. The basket features a sturdy bentwood oak handle, a sturdy bentwood oak frame, and carefully positioned ribs forming the framework on the base and on the sides. Be sure to check out the well-crafted rim, and the nicely woven handle support. It was woven by a talented Southern weaver named Lucille Prater. The basket is initialed on the underside of the handle, "L.P." and dated '86. This basket will make a terrific addition to someone's collection and remains sturdy enough to actually use if desired. The basket is a perfect size for display, measuring 8" across at the rim, 5" deep, and 8½" tall to the top of the handle. These symmetrical proportions are very pleasing. I am pleased to tell you that this basket is in perfect shape with no breaks or other damage. The handle, rim, and base are all in perfect condition.
