I acquired the gourds in Liberia, West Africa in 1982. The gourds were used as dance rattles together with the drums and very frequently accompanied by the sound created by the dancers jumping onto two crossed lengthy wooden stumps which produced a sound by clashing one against the other - that was the basic "orchestra" of the most tribal dancing I had opportunity to witness in Liberia. The design has been carved and burned into the surface of the gourd. The gourds are approx. 7" - 8" in length. Each gourd has a hole at the thin end. I tied them together with a thin fishing line and used them as a wall decoration.
