7” tall pitcher with early salt glaze, hand scribing, and the more imperfect look of the early earthenware, t is most likely early 1900s. The pitcher was purchased in the mid 20s from the Log Cabin Potter in Winston Salem, and has the look of Hilton/Helton family style. There are no markings on the pitcher to indicate who the potter was. This wonderful piece of early North Carolina Art Pottery is in excellent condition. No chips or new cracks on the lip, body or the bottom. The handle has some separation from the body that looks to have happened when it was first made. There is one tiny surface crack that also looks like it happened during the time it was made. Now… what is in the bottom of this pitcher? It looks to be a chunk of brown glazed clay. It is solid and part of the pitcher. I have had no luck in finding out what it is, but…the creator of the piece must have wanted it there. the label on the bottom is part of an inventory tag. It can be removed from the buyer if they wish. It does not affect the piece.
