This is an ULTRA RARE Victorian Solid Silver Combined Inkwell & Matchstriker which is Fully Hallmarked for Birmingham 1891 & made by the prolific silversmith "John Grinsell". This silversmith was renowned for producing both inkwells & matchstrikers but the combination of both is very seldom seen. The base is formed from glass & is of bulbous form with a ribbed body for striking matches. The Stunning Solid Silver Top has a shaped collar with fluted & foliate decoration leading to a flared perfectly hinged lid with embossed fluted, foliate & rococo decoration bordering a central cartouche which contains iniitals. The interior of the lid still retains its original gilding & there is a cut glass stopper which may be original. Presented in very good clean condition with NO damage. The Inkwell / Matchstriker stands 8.2cm high. It weighs an impressive 224g gross. Simply Superb.
