(213-305 cm) Offered is the very decorative large Suzani from legendary Samarkand. Finding himself in a traditional Uzbek house for the first time, a westerner will be involuntarily amazed. First of all, he will wonder at almost total lack of furniture. A patterned oriental tapis or a tufted carpet on the floor, blankets – kurpacha and pillows laid together in wall niches, a trunk decorated with engraving and a low little table khan-takhta make almost all the furniture of the room. Another important part of family life decoration is large big embroidered wall panels - suzane hanging out on the walls. Embroidery has always been important in the ornamentation of the Uzbek home. In the house every part of the wall is filled with embroidered articles of different purpose and use, ranging from small things, like pouches for combs, a mirrow (oinahalta), tea (choikhalta), to bigger items, like suzanies. Niches in the walls are covered with special embroideries (kirpech, tokchapush and choishab). Embroidered strips, zardevor, hang along the upper part of three walls - the two longitudial and one end-wall. At the time of the nuptials one can see skullcaps and dresses of the bride which add to the decor of the room. Offered is the GRAND SUZANI, fully silk hand-embroidered on the natural cotton foundation. It was used as a tapestry and decorated an especial wall in the drawing room. The composition consists of the repetition of fifteen graceful rosettes. The floral rosette is a classic motif, widespread in art of the Muslim East. It is used in wood painting and carving, ganch carving, ceramics, embroidery and carpets. However, this composition - strict rows of rosettes is characteristic only for the embroidery. Not accenting the problem of its genesis, the scholars, paying attention to this composition, noted: "Numerous suzani and bolinpushes with new, for Samarkand, patterns - rows of rosettes had appeared by the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century". Searching for analogies can throw light on this issue. Similar compositions could be revealed in the Bukhara embroidery and in Shrub rugs from Kerman (Iran). These carpets became known from the 17th century, and, unlike ornamental carpets with vegetative-floral decor, imitateed natural forms. Such sudden occurrence of this composition in Samarkand suzani enables to guess its borrowed character - probably, under influence of the Bukhara embroidery and imported carpets, which patterns the local embroiderers tried to imitate. However, interpretation of various rosettes and bushes reveals original local character. The brief analysis of Samarkand suzani patterns enables to notice, that the ornamental set of local embroiderers was connected both with local traditions and with pan-Islamic heritage.
