Five unpublished photographs of Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens), on board a few different ships, as well as on and around an engine of the Great Northern Railway, all taken at different points along the West Coast of the United States; each 4 5/8 x 3 5/8 in. (117 x 92 mm). The photos were taken during a tour organized by Major James Pond who arranged a worldwide lecture tour for the then broke Clemens. Also seen are Clemens's wife and their daughter, Clara. The lot also includes an A.L.s. by Cyril Clemens, president of the International Mark Twain Society and a distant cousin of the author; later copies of some of the photos; assorted printed ephemera.
