TOSHIRO FUKADA PRISONER OF WAR ART LUZON PHILIPPINES JAPAN SUGAMO PRISON 1947 41 An important and historic original 10.50" x 8.00" hand drawn pencil sketch by Japanese POW (Prisoner of War) Toshiro Fukada showing two prisoners playing a game, perhaps Shogi or Japanese Chess. Signed and dated by Fukada at bottom. This water color/sketch is part of a collection of over 60 works of art by Captain Toshiro Fukada who was held as a Japanase POW in Luzon, Philippines before being transferred to Sugamo Prison in Tokyo where he was held along with many other high ranking military officials. The collection includes Fudaka's sketch book mostly with landscape views of prison life yet also self portraits and portraits of Lt. General Tomoyuki Yamashita (Tiger of Malaysia) before his hanging in a cane field southwest of Manila, February 22, 1946. As paper was scarce many of the auction lots offered have renderings on both sides. Others have personal reflections and poetry on the reverse by noted Japanese poet, Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902). The art was confiscated on Fudaka's transfer to Sugamo Prison in Tokyo and brought back to the United States by David Hamilton (1929-2005) a U.S. Army veteran who served in Japan after World War II as the head photogrpaher at Sugamo Prison.
