We are listing this superb very rarely seen 1845 FALSTAFF relief molded stoneware jug (with a nice pewter lid) which was made by Thomas Furnival & Co. (only in operation from 1844-1846). The jug is marked on its base with a raised date registration diamond for December 30,1845 with the letters T F & Co on one side, and a separate impressed number 30. You can see another example (without the pewter lid) on page 50 of A COLLECTOR'S GUIDE TO NINETEENTH-CENTURY JUGS, and it is described as being very rare. The design of the jug perfectly captures William Shakespeare's greatest comic figure, the rotund buffoon Falstaff. The molding on the jug is very crisp (particularly on Falstaff's face), and one of his arms is very creatively used to form the handle. With its lid the jug is 8 inches tall, 5.5 inches at its widest point, very creatively designed and expertly potted, and it is in very good condition.
