Diminutive Slip-Decorated Redware Mug, possibly Solomon Loy, Alamance County, NC, circa 1820-1850, with footed base, ovoid body, and flared rim, decorated with spattered manganese and yellow-colored slip along with a brushed yellow-slip line on interior of the rim. Entire surface, including underside, covered in a clear lead glaze. The glaze scheme on this mug is closely-related to an example in the collection of Old Salem Museum and Gardens, Winston-Salem, NC, also attributed to Loy. The form of this mug differs from the cylindrical style of larger Loy examples. Its shape and size suggest it may have been made as a child's cup. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently found in a Pennsylvania collection. Chips and wear to rim. Some light wear to slip and handle. H 2 1/4".
