The following letter being offered is both rare and very historical. This letter is from Dr. Abner O. Shaw to Colonel John C. Cobb. Cobb was with the 15th Maine and 96th U.S. Colored Infantry in The Civil War. The letter is being sent to express regret for not being able to attend the 50th wedding anniversary of Colonel Cobb and his wife. Although Cobb is a notable and historic figure himself, it is the sender who makes this letter remarkable. Abner O. Shaw served in The Civil War as Surgeon to The 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry from the end of 1863 to the end of the war. Shaw was the Asst. Surgeon in the 20th Maine while at Petersburg when Joshua Chamberlain was shot and dying from a near fatal abdominal injury. Shaw and another surgeon attempted in vain to repair the profuse bleeding and the one surgeon urged Shaw to give in and let Chamberlain be. Shaw made one last attempt and miraculously was able to save Chamberlain's life. Chamberlain personally credited Shaw with saving him from the near fatal wound. He later put in for Shaw to become the full surgeon for the 20th Maine which he eventually became.
