The Art of Pen and Ink The starkness of line illustration makes it the strongest of drawn visual expressions. T are no other applications of color that achieve more contrast than black ink against a white background. It is this characteristic that places pen and ink drawing in a class by itself. Employed with great virtuosity by master artists throughout history, pen and ink is an extremely versatile medium, ideally suited for both expressive and representational drawing. In Western art, the use of pen and ink can be traced back to the 9th century, characteristic of which are lively precise figures and animals. English artists developed the pen and ink drawing into a finished artform, probably the finest examples of which are the 1825 series of visionary landscape drawings by Samuel Palmer. Cindy Alvarado was self-taught in the medium and started using pen and ink for illustrations and logos when she was 20 years old. She used it in her illustrations for Dog Fancy and Dogs USA. Cindy uses a crow-quill pen on Bristol board for this detailed and time-consuming technique. She began painting and drawing animals as soon as she could hold a pencil, and was especially fascinated by dogs and horses. When Cindy was twelve, she traveled to India with her mother, an anthropology professor, w she lived for two years. The amazing variety of wildlife and the the intricate beauty of Indian art was an inspiration to her. After her return to the United States, she completed her first commission for the president of the Racking Horse Association at only 16 years of age.Cindy studied art at the University of Texas at Austin, and the realism and emotion in her artwork comes from observation as well as her feeling for animals. Her favorite medium is watercolor, although she also works in pen and ink and graphite. She has exhibited her artwork extensively and her paintings are in collections throughout the United States, as well as Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, England, Japan, Scotland, and Tasmania. Cindy has won national awards at the Art Show at the Dog Show, an international juried show. She is a member of the Artists Registry at the AKC Museum of Dog, and one of her paintings is in the permanent collection of the AKC Museum of the Dog. She has also exhibited her work in juried shows at the William Kenton Gallery at the International Museum of the Horse in Kentucky Horse Park, the Raymond James Financial Associate Art Show, and the International Miniature Art Show (Miniature Art Society of Florida).
