Up for auction is a lot of Sgt. William Jack' estate. He was a Civil War Soldier from Hartford, CT. This is a very interesting lot of items because it is a great depiction of the life of a Civil War Soldier. This lot shows his history, with a lot of detail, including his G.A.R. items. This lot would be a great Civil War starter collection or an even better addition to an existing collection. This estate was purchased At Scottie's Antiques & Militaria in 2007/2008. Sgt William Jack was born in Conneticut and was a member of G.A.R. Post #168 (Malcolm Ammidon) in Southbridge, MI. He died on April 2nd, 1909. Sgt. William Jack was mustered into "k" Co. CT 20th infantry on 8/21/1862 as a private. He was then mustered out on 6/13/1865 at Fort Lincoln, Washington, DC. He had two promotions: The first was Corpl. on 4/22/1863, the second was on 1/25/1865 to 1st Sgt. Included in this auction: -His CDV, with is wife and child. The back says "REG 20", "Kellogg Brothers"(the photographer in Hartford, CT), and "Sgt. Will. Jack" The condition of the photo is good. There is signs of age. There is some yellowing and a few age spots on the front. The back is in great shape with very little wear. This is a stunning piece of history. (Please refer to pictures for more details) -A Soldier History Sheet, in a plastic protector. This document is from the Civil War Research and Genealogy Database. This document is in good condition and is protected in a plastic protector. -His Militia-style Sword. This sword is in very aged condition. The Ivory handle is loose along with a chip on the handle, and there is surface rust/pitting on the blade edge. This is a beautiful piece overall and would look great in any collection. (Please refer to pictures for more details, or contact for additional pictures. There is limited space for pictures and we have more pictures with more detail.) The handle detail is stunning and would be amazing restored. -The "New York Herald" newspaper, dated September, 1863. This paper contains news of the war and a letter from a Union Prisoner of War, along with other stories. It comes in a plastic protector The condition of the paper is very good, especially considering the date. Please refer to the pictures for more detail. -A Pennsylvania Mine check from Michigan. (Pay to the order of "WM Rogers Todd". This may have been a relative of Sgt Jack, or possibly one of his company men that he served with. The condition of the check is good. The check is slightly faded from age, but the details and writing are still clearly visible and legible. -G.A.R. envelope from J. L. Bennett Jr. to William Jack. The back of the envelope says "GAR" The envelope is in very nice condition. The ink printed on the envelope along with the pencil text are both in excellent shape with very little fading. There is little signs of aging on the envelope itself and this would make for a very interesting piece in a collection. -A G.A.R "FCL" Medal, which says "DAUGHTERS of UNION VETERANS of the CIVIL WAR 1861-1865" This medal is very nicely aged. The details on the medal are clearly legible and the ribbon shows little signs of fading. This is an amazing medal and it maintains a wonderful antique feel along with beautiful detail. (Please refer to pictures for more details) -We believe the next item is a half box for the "FCL" medal. It reads "WRC" on the back. The condition of the half box is very delicate. There are signs of wear and some damage as the box is starting to fall apart a bit. (Please refer to pictures for more details) -A G.A.R. guest ribbon, so that a spouse or relative was allowed into the reunion encampments. This item is in fair condition. There is sure signs of aging and use, but structurally seems to be in good condition. The print is also very clear and vibrant considering the age. A G.A.R. "President" medal with an insignia that looks like an overlay of the letters, "C", "E", and "I". This medals condition is good, though the ribbons condition is fair. The medal has a gr... read more
