D'Arpentigny, M. Le Capitaine C. S. The Science of the Hand: or, The Art of Recognising the Tendencies of the Human Mind by the Observation of the Formation of the Hands. Translated from the French and edited with an introduction, appendices and commentary on the text by Ed. Heron-Allen. With original plates and explanatory diagrams by Rosamund Brunel Horsley. London: Ward Lock and Co, 1889. 444p with numerous woodcut illustrations. Internally very good apart from occasional spotting/browning and minor creasing to the corner of a few pages. The owner's name and a date are in pencil and ink on the the fly leaf. The binding is tight but the boards are worn and with signs of water damage (see photos); the spine section is missing completely. A fascinating handbook of cheirognomy from the late Victorian age, which tells you how to read all kinds of hands: knotty, square and pointed, artistic and useful, the hands of Catholics, Protestants, North Americans - even women!
