Royal Copenhagen 'Ashtray'This auction is a Royal Copenhagen Ashtray. At least this is what is states in the Royal Copenhagen factory catalog. The middle bar is used as a support of the lit end of a cigarette, suspending it above the ash. (Many thanks to a viewer who provided this information. Ashtray has the Blue Lace pattern and the Royal Copenhagen mark on the bottom with the number 49. Diameter of the bottom is approx. 3 3/8 and the top is approx. 4.25. The height is approx. 1.25 inches. In very good condition but you'll see a slight manufacturing flaw (a very small black dot) on the inside rim.The will be a true conversation piece as you tell your friends that Danes even offer cigarettes between courses at dinner!More comments from a very nice & helpful viewer: That dark brown dot is not really a flaw! I am rather certain that this piece is pre-1894, at that time, the kilns were oak-fired. Occasionally, one of the cords of oak would pop, (think of a fireplace with logs) and bit of burnt ember might land on the glaze. Another point of praise: the two digit number denotes the artist that painted the specimen. They switched to initials sometime in the 20th Century.
