Ronald Hayes PEARSON MidCentury Modern Sterling BRACELET~1950s Studio Art~RAREWith the clean lines and elegant design that characterize the best work of Studio Artists working in jewelry in the 50s in America (and other parts of the world) this vintage-modern bangle bracelet is dimensional and so sculptural. The shifting planes of silver provide contrast, creating interesting shadows with movement in the play of light as the bracelet swoops and swirls about the wrist. Graceful and flowing, it has a strong sense of motion and a wonderful profile on the arm.On the inside of the band, it is signed "Pearson" and "Sterling" as shown on page 262 of Modernist Jewelry 1930-1960. The signature is a little faint but you should be able to read it in the close-up. (Last photo.) Ronald Hayes Pearson, who died in 1997, was the son of an art teacher and became active in metal work in the late 40s-early 50s, at the beginning of the hey day of the crafts movement in America. He received numerous honors and awards during his career and his work has been shown in many prestigious exhibitions.Basically ovoid in shape with a tapering form, the band of silver is about 5/16" wide at the widest point (but set on a flat surface, the top of the bracelet stands about 7/16" high). It has an inside circumference of approximately 7-1/2" (it is difficult to measure because of the shape). Inside diameter is 2-1/4" across by 2-1/2". Outside diameter is about 2-1/2" by just over 2-3/4". It weighs 15.4 grams.There is a minuscule ding on one edge and apart from that, it is in Excellent vintage condition with only surface dirt, slight tarnish and light surface scratches as expected signs of wear for its age.On page 203 of Modernist Jewelry 1930-1960, The Wearable Art Movement , the author writes: "The simple modern designs that Pearson created, look as if they grew directly out of the forging process. He was a consummate craftsman; his forms, whether cast or constructed exemplify his complete control of the metal--'Surface qualities enhance form and details of function have been perfectly analyzed.'"
