For your consideration is an extremely rare 1920’s to 1930’s era – 3 ¾” tall by 5 ½” wide (from end to end across the handles) est. 6-8 oz. silver plate hinged lid sugar bowl made for “The Ritz Carlton” Hotel operations. This piece may have been used at the famous Ritz in Paris, at one of the Ritz in the United States, or at one of the other early Ritz in Europe. But no mater where it was used, it is a prime early example of the most elegant hotel silver that was used by the Ritz; especially, with the ornate lion finial atop the lid. Historically, the Hotel Ritz was officially opened on June 1st, 1898 by Cesar Ritz. Located at 15 Palace Vendome in the center of Paris, it is noted as being one of the most prestigious hotels in the entire world. Ritz went onto open many other hotels across Europe and even the United States. His first hotel in the US didn’t start opening until during the roaring 20’s. But the most noted hotel was his first; the Hotel Ritz of Paris. The hotel’s structure was originally that of the Péreire brothers Credit Mobilier financial Company. Credit Mobilier also was one of the main financiers of the building of the Transcontinental Railroad (between the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific) in the United States. Ritz converted this grand structure into even something more grand; his luxury hotel. The hotel has been one of the most prestigious hotels in all of France. Over the years, its guest register has included the names of many famous persons, politicians, aristocrats, and so one. Some of the names include King Edward VII, Rudolph Valento, Greta Garbo, Jean-Pual Sartre, Coco Chanel, Maurice Chevalier, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemmingway, and many others. Today, the hotel is still in operation and is the oldest remaining hotel of the Ritz operation. It was not until circa, 1926-1927 that Albert Keller established the Ritz-Carlton Investing Company to operate Ritz Carlton Hotels in the United States. The first hotel that was opened with the Ritz Carlton name was The Ritz-Carlton, Boston. Later, other Ritz Carlton Hotels were opened in at Madison & 54th (Central Park) in New York City, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Atlantic City New Jersey, and even Boca Raton and Naples, Florida. But the Great Depression took its tool on many of the hotels, and by 1951, only the Ritz-Carlton in Boston was in operation under its original owners and name. In addition to the famous Parish Ritz and also outside of the United States, there were also Ritz Carlton Hotel in Montreal, Quebec – Canada; Moscow, Germany, Italy, and other European locations, to name just a few. But no mater where a Ritz Carlton was later built and opened, the service and accommodations was considered as some of the finest hotel service available. This particular sugar bowl would have been used in one of the Ritz Carlton Hotel’s restaurant, lounge, dining rooms, or even for room service to hot sugar for hot coffee, hot tea, iced tea, and so on. Additionally, it would have been used in connection with the Ritz Carlton Hotel china and glassware for actual table service. It is the heavyweight type Steamship, Hotel, and Railroad China. It would have been used in connection with the Ritz Hotel silver soldered – silver plate and glassware for table service. On the top it features the hotel’s very elaborate logo with “Hotel Ritz” in a banner under it. The top of the lid has embossed laurel leaves and a great looking finial atop the lid that give it great character. The handle is very ornate and the bottom mount of the holder looks superb! What is also completely amazing about this piece is the fact that it has the most ornate rampant lion finial atop the lid.
