This listing is for a signed mid-20th century Western watercolor illustration painting of a rider on horseback approaching a man walking in the winter landscape. The painting is on paper, and unframed, it measures 14.25 by 20.25 inches or 36.1 by 51.4 cm. The painting shows a man on horseback riding through a snowy winter landscape and approach a man walking out of the forest wood line. The painting has nice attention to detail throughout and the use of color is excellent. It is signe on the lower right "LILLIS", this for Richard James Lillis (1899-1994) who is an early illustrator of pulp fiction and later a watercolorist. His paintings were on the covers of over one-hundred western pulp novels and magazines. In later years, he devoted himself to watercolors inspired by works of John Singer Sargent and Winslow Homer, and he studied with John Pike of Woodstock, New York and Joe Rossi and Mario Cooper of the Art Students League. The condition is as follows; there is some foxing to the surface of the paper. Again it is unframed.
