RED WING, MINNESOTA STONEWARE SOUVENIR FIGURAL PIGS, LOT OF TWO, the larger with a thick semi-translucent Rockingham-style brown glaze and the smaller with a mostly solid Albany slip-style dark brown glaze, both free-standing on four legs with heads and tails angled to the right, unglazed undersides of feet and incised/unglazed details to eyes and mouths, hollow-molded bodies each with pierced venting hole to undersides. Red Wing, MN. Late 19th century. 2 1/8" H x 4 3/4" L smaller, 3 3/8" H x 7 1/4" L larger.Literature: Parallels Gary and Bonnie Tefft - Red Wing Potters & Their Wares, Second Edition, p. 78 and DePasquale/Peterson - Red Wing Collectibles, p. 134.Catalogue Note: The larger pig offered here illustrates the production size of Red Wing's typical so-called "Blind Pigs", as they are described in the 1896 Union Stoneware Co. price list, available wholesale for "12 1/2 cents" each. The smaller seems to be significantly rarer, with very few auction records that we can find. It does not seem to have been a typical "production" piece based on known price lists, although multiple examples of this size are known, and discussed in both the Teffts' book and DePasquale/Peterson's guide.
