This gorgeous oriental "Wish Keeper" was handmade on the potters wheel and measures 5 1/2" tall by 5 1/2" wide. Its banded with a single strand of bright copper wire that adds character. Its beautiful matte patina is rich with swirls of beautiful colors with bursts of copper is derived from a copper rich glaze and lends to it's overall beauty. Its topped with a piece of bamboo that enhance the colors and add character to this unique piece. Its stylized oriental designed lid tops this piece off as a true collectors item. Included is a folded information sheet about legend of the 'Wish Keeper'. A great addition to any collection or a pleasing gift for a friend. Wish Keepers, or Wishing Pots, are based on a Chinese legend w placing a written wish inside a closed vessel causes the wish to come true. Write your wishes, dreams or desires on a small piece of paper and place it in you Wish Keeper or, present a Wish Keeper to a friend with your special wish for them written and hidden inside. The bottom is unglazed and turned black from the heavy reduction the piece was given during the post firing of the piece.All my pieces are wheel thrown 'one-of-a-kind' hand made originals. Though some of my pieces may look similiar I use no molds in creating them - only my hands! Couple that with the unpredictability of the raku firing process and "No two pots are ever alike"! Each piece created is a unique piece of art and is personally signed by me - Ron Aubuchon . Most pieces also have the 'Raku' symbol stamped on the bottom. All my work is of gallery quality! RAKU My pots are traditionally fired Raku pieces. By traditional I mean they are bisque fired, glazed, then fired to approximately 1800 degrees F. Once that temperature is reached the piece is then quickly removed from the hot kiln with tongs and placed in a barrel of combustionable material (My studio is surrounded with Oak trees so my weapon of choice for reduction is naturally oak leaves). When placed in the barrel the leaves immediately burst into flames. The piece is covered with additional leaves and a lid is placed on the barrel to produce an oxygen free chamber. After about 2 - 3 minutes the piece is then removed from the combustion chamber and plunged into water to prevent any further oxidation. Once cooled the piece is scrubbed to remove smoke and excess carbon revealing it's beauty. This technique of firing produces truly original "one-of-a-kind" pieces of collectable art. Raku means pleasure, happiness, contentment, and enjoyment. Each Raku pot is handled individually through out the process from raw clay to the finished pot, allowing a more intimate involvement with each pot. Because of the unpredictability of the Raku firing process no two pieces are ever alike. Participating in a Raku firing is like watching fireworks on the 4th of July! Because of the terrific stress and thermal shock the pot is subjected to during the Raku firing process cracking occurs throughout the glaze and the clay body. The cracking of the glaze acquires carbon during the reduction process, highlighting them and adding beauty to the piece.
