My absolute favorite oldies radio shows of all time is Solid Gold Scrapbook . Of course it is a Dick Bartley Production, his first venture into syndication and it is a more 'pure' form of oldies show than any subsequent show he has done or any other famous syndication dj with the exception of Dick Clark who had a similar show for a year or two before starting his Rock Roll and Remember show. Since it was a daily one hour show Dick should specialize in more finely tuned themes than the four hour weekend shows. One of the things this oldies radio show series did best was its specialty theme shows. Billing itself as the " Pop Music Almanac ", Solid Gold Scrapbook prided itself in being the definitive oldies show on the radio. For a hour each day, five hours a week, for over 8 years, show hosts brought the best of music, interviews and information. This show is a great example. Called "Dion Dimucci Birthday Salute " the show brings you the most that you could ever hope for. Just think, on a one hour show you will hear 15 classic tunes from the early rock era, all great classics from Dion Dimucci, alias Dion of Dion and the Belmonts! Dion had many many hits in the late 50's and early 60's and then came back strong in the late 60's. He is a distinctive artist with so many wonderful and great hit songs. You will hear most of his greatest hits on this one hour tribute. From his earliest all the way to his classic Abraham Martin and John, the career of this amazing artist will be followed in song and story. Not too shabby! It is a great and fascinating show. It is extremely rare and a special hour. It is a great hour. The music is GREAT! It is a testimony to the early rock era and you can enjoy it over and over again as your own oldies show. These are the real oldies! And they can be yours - music, interviews, and all the expertise of great dj show hosts. You will love this show and it belongs in your collection. What a show! It is a great variety of music along with interviews, commentary and fun facts not only about music but the times in which the music was popular. Each show was like a history lesson of music and the times. How can you beat that!!!!!! You will super great tunes and the best part is that you can hear them again and again, over and over, whenever you want. "Over and over and over and over again", to quote a famous lyric! It is the best format for an oldies show ever made and Dick Bartley and his crew were masters at it. Whether through him when he hosted the show or through his dj’s who came after him, you will enjoy the great production values of this series from beginning to end through over 1000 different shows over 7 years. You enjoy their expertise on this show and every show made through their devotion to the best music of all time. This is one great hour in music and the best of all, it is vinyl and virgin vinyl at that probably played only the day it aired. After that the stations were to destroy them or return them to United Stations. Well, believe it or not, these shows all came from the United Stations executive to whom they were sent back. And, guess what, he did not destroy them but indexed them by date and stored them for all these years and then finally decided there was no purpose to in keeping them. He decided to sell and through some complicated negotiations, I got them. I have almost the whole collection and I am selling most of them to finance my son’s college education now that all my retirement funds have tanked out. You have a unique opportunity to get some of the best shows ever made, and I do not mean that as an exaggeration. This series is the best oldies that ever aired on American radio . You will just not hear most of these songs on any other show.
