The late Rita Colbert was an importer and an expert on ethnographic and Pre-Colombian art. In the 1960�s she began traveling to South America to learn about the various cultures, and in the process, started collecting unique pieces of folk and ancient art. Rita and her husband, Charles, were passionate about exploring the past and present lives of indigenous people. They also met and represented many talented folk artists along the way. Rita had an uncanny eye for the beautiful and the unusual.In 1968 she started the Colbert Collection, importing ethnographic and folk art to sell to museums and individuals. She traveled extensively to find the pieces that gave her company its reputation for integrity and good taste. She sold the wholesale end of The Colbert Collection in 1984 and kept her private collection in the Colbert Gallery in her home, with many beautiful contemporary, antique, and ancient pieces. Over the years her knowledge of Pre-Columbian and ethnographic art was sought out by collectors and museums.
