This auction is for a superb pair of thefinest quality porcelain vases with lavish hand applied decoration...the front of the bulbous bodies have vibrant sprays of poppies and forget-me-nots accentuated with rich jewelled gilding on a warm ‘blush’ ground with smaller sprays to the backs. The fluted rims are pierced as are the intricate and flamboyant ‘griffin’ handles which are finished with soft ‘dusted’ gilding...the vases stand on shallow pedestal bases above which there is a band of crisply detailed relief moulding emulating waves with sea serpents. The condition overall is very good and aesthetically excellent... at some time one vase had a small piece to the back rim broken off which has been neatly and securely reattached, this has been more than allowed for within the price to compensate for any future restoration costs if required, it is more apparent to the inside and does not have a significantly negative effect on the display (see photos) so restoration in my opinion is not essential. Small gaps seen to the pierced handles is not damage, they are in the same place to each handle and would have come from the mold this way during manufacture...I can find no further chips, cracks or restoration . The gilding and decoration has remained bright and intact. The vases were made at the factory of Ernst Wahliss in Turn (Bohemia) read more
