This is a very rare Volunteer Squadron A Troop 2nd Lieutenant M1895 Undress Tunic or Fatigues from the Spanish American War. This piece is marked US Vol TROOP A * NY CAV 1898 * J S F?? Troop A fought during the Puerto Rican Campaign of the Spanish American War.This is a very elaborate tunic that follows in line with previous Squadron A uniforms. This piece is much more elaborate than most other Cavalry Tunics and especially more decorative than most other M1895 Undress Blouses. This piece is made of blue wool that feels like a velvet. This piping is yellow. The epaulettes are blue with yellow piping. There is a NY button on each epaulet. There is a small hole at the cuff on the left arm. This is no bigger than the head of an pencil eraser.The inside lining of this Troop A Tunic is very intact with all the stitching still tight. The only exception is at the right armpit area. The lined pillow case lining has separated from the black lining about 3”.Marking on inside left upper sleeve : US Vol TROOP A * NY CAV 1898 * J S F??Squadron A ( USV Squadron, Troop A of the NY National Guard during SPAN AM WAR )History:Squadron A was often called out from its Madison Avenue Armory, which occupied an entire city block between 94th and 95th Streets, to escort presidents, governors, and foreign dignitaries. The Squadron was known for its fine riding skills and elegant uniforms, which it showed off in parades at the National Horse Show.Members of Squadron served as soldiers as well. Volunteer Squadron A troopers served in the Puerto Rican Campaign in 1898, and in 1916 the entire Squadron was called into federal service to patrol the Mexican Border and to support the Pancho Villa Expedition. During World War I, 796 Squadron A members served, and 609 became commissioned officers. As part of the 105th Machine Gun Battalion, the Squadron played an important role in the smashing of the Hindenburg Line. Members were highly decorated, including a Medal of Honor recipient.In World War II the unit was federalized as the 101st Cavalry, Horse/Mechanized in early 1941. Following Pearl Harbor, Squadron A men served in all branches of the armed forces worldwide, and two additional Medals of Honor were earned in addition to an array of other distinctions.Actions:Troop "A" was organized April 3, 1889, and performed duty at Buffalo during the switchmen's strike in August, 1892, and at Brooklyn during the motormen's strike in January, 1895. It was divided into two troops, to be known as troops 1 and 2, and these organized into a squadron designated "A," February 9, 1895. November 27, 1890, squadron "A" was divided into three troops, to re known as troops 1, 2 and 3.Squadron "A," having volunteered its services, its commanding officer was authorized in general orders, No. 8, general headquarters, state of New York, dated adjutant-general's office, Albany, April 27, 1898, to select from the three troops of the squadron sufficient officers and enlisted men to form one troop of cavalry to enter the service of the United States.This order was promptly executed by the selection of the following officers: Captain Howard G. Badgley, captain, troop 2; First Lieutenant Frederic R. Coudert, Jr., first lieutenant, troop 2; Second Lieutenant Joseph S. Frelinghuysen, second lieutenant, troop 3, and eighty-one enlisted men, equally drawn from troops 1, 2 and 3 of the squadron.In accordance with special orders, No. 72, dated A. G. O., Albany, May 1, 1898, this troop reported to Major Avery D.
