ORIGINAL ABSTRACT WATERCOLOR PORTRAITBY HUNGARIAN ARTIST JOZSEF Z. KOVACSUp for auction is an original watercolor portrait by Hungarian artist Jozsef Z. Kovacs (Ze Kovács József). The portrait is an abstract image, depicting what I believe to be Joseph Stalin with a split face and represented as a clown. Kovacs' paintings often have a political message, usually mocking leaders of the Soviet Union who controlled political leaders in Hungary from about 1949 to 1989. This watercolor painting has a unique style with the color portrait finely executed over an abstract black and white etching (see 4th photo). The artist skillfully and seamlessly incorporated features of the etching into the portrait, a technique I've seen referred to as "fusion" of two art forms.The watercolor was done on heavy paper (the medium of the etching). The exposed portion of the framed image measures approximately 11 3/4" x 9 1/2". The painting is pencil signed by the artist and appears to be dated "VII 22 2000". Additional pencil text appears in the center and lower left margins, but the writing is hard to read and in Hungarian. This wonderful painting comes matted and professionally framed with nonglare glass. The frame measures approximately 19 3/4" tall and 17 3/8" wide.
