American Civil War veteran and Supreme Court justice; son of the author Oliver Wendell Holmes. ALS. ("O.W. Holmes"). 1p. 8vo. Washington, D.C., March 14, 1931. On Supreme Court stationery. To Mrs. Pinchot (likely suffragette, labor activist, Pennsylvania first lady, office seeker, and diplomat Cornelia Bryce Pinchot, 1881-1960). ********* "It is a very great pleasure to get a letter from one of the most charming women I ever met and I thank you for it. I must say as much as that notwithstanding your thoughtful prohibition I hope very much that I may see you while here before I get my marching orders. And in any event shall be proud to think that the memory which I supposed ever after may soon remain also with you. Ever sincerely yours..." ********* Prior to studying law at Harvard, Holmes fought for the Union during the Civil War (including Antietam) and was wounded several times. He became a prominent jurist in Massachusetts and was appointed to the Supreme Court by Theodore Roosevelt in 1902. During a 30-year distinguished career, Holmes earned the moniker, "The Great Dissenter" due to the large number of dissenting opinions he authored during his tenure. Despite the great esteem in which he was held, his colleagues suggested that he retire from the bench due to his advanced age - possibly the "marching orders" referred to in our letter. He stepped down on January 12, 1932 at the age of 91, the oldest justice to serve the country's highest court. ********* Cornelia Bryce Pinchot was the wife of Progressive politician Gifford Pinchot, an ally of Theodore Roosevelt and was herself admired by TR for her political acumen. "Her political interests began with woman's suffrage, a cause she supported vigorously. She spoke out for birth control, women's rights and educational reform and blasted sweat shops and those who abused child labor in the work place. Cornelia encouraged women to take an active part in politics and career, served on the local school board, supported prohibition and was one of the first prominent women to take a ride in an airplane," ("Cornelia Bryce Pinchot," Grey Towers National Historic Site, National Park Service website). ********* Pinchot actively campaigned for her husband's election as governor of Pennsylvania, and, later, pursued her own political career, running for Congress numerous times.
