This landmark book is well known to fans and dealers alike as THE FIRST APPEARANCE OF ARIC (aka: X-O), HELPING KICK OFF THE FAMOUS VALIANT CRAZE OF THE EARLY NINETIES! Note that this book is perhaps the hottest of the early Valiants, with the debut and origin of X-O as well as the 1st appearances of Ken Clarkson and Lydia (Spider-Alien), and it is a Jim Shooter masterpiece; The title that kicked off the re-start of Valiant in recent days was the new X-O Manowar #1, sure to bring many fresh fans, wanting to eventually pick up a top-grade copy of this, the original, from 25 years ago. In other words: This is your chance to get this original first issue in phenomenal shape, before more price increases! Anybody who was active in the hobby will tell you about how this upstart publisher, helmed by Jim Shooter, started its own new "universe", beginning with Magnus Robot Fighter, followed by Solar, which were both previously Gold Key heroes of the silver/bronze era. But then Valiant commenced introducing their own all-original heroes, which opened the doors for Harbinger, X-O Manowar, Shadowman, Rai, Archer and Armstrong, Bloodshot, Turok, and other great titles soon to follow. The prices escalated rapidly, and those holding copies of such pre-Unity issues could not re-stock fast enough, as demand was literally through the roof. The books had thought-provoking storytelling, coupled with great artwork, and a unique coloring method that gave them a painted feel, unlike the colors found in the big publishers. Due to the fact that Valiant was a newcomer, many dealers didn't want to risk buying something from a small fledgling 'independent publisher' that had previously only put out a small handful of silly videogame-related comics such as Super Mario Brothers, and as a result those cautious dealers were left without any copies of the hottest books to hit the market since the eighties. And because the print-runs were rather small, the books were not readily available from the major distributors after the instantaneous sell-outs, and they were promptly scarce and costly on the back-issue market! Which worked out very well for us, as we were one of the few established comic companies that anticipated their success and pre-ordered large quantities of all their books beginning with Magnus #1 and continuing up until well after the massive Unity storyline and Deathmate crossover. The rights to the Valiant superheroes recently changed hands again, and there will be future incarnations of these great titles. Valiant Entertainment, Inc., put out some Hardcover books, which included new material from JIM SHOOTER, and an all-new Valiant superhero. They recently settled the dispute over proprietary rights, and there are regularly new Valiant products available through Diamond Distribution, and film treatments are much anticipated by the many devout fans. Which bodes very well for the original Valiant books, especially this series, which was one of their earliest titles and stars their hottest character! This great cover is a treat to behold when it's unblemished by such pesky detractors as creases and spine-stresses. It has a Jim Shooter story coupled with great artwork by such masters as Barry Windsor-Smith and Bob Layton. And the famous multi-hued Valiant colors, of course.
