Nelson McCoy Pedestal -- 1935 What a suprise! In the deep recesses of the store room in the long-defunt flower shop I recently purchased, WOW! Lots of green McCoy pieces! The reasons they were tucked t will become obvious once I get on with the description, but still ... this stuff is great! This pedestal appears on page 123 in Sanford's Guide to McCoy Pottery. Described as a basketweave pedestal from 1935. The bottom is inscribed with the Nelson McCoy mark, and 'USA'. The pedestal stands nearly 19" tall and weighs 15 lbs., unpackaged. It is seafoam green and has the following flaws/damage: ** A "chip" well below the lip that seems to be an 'air hole' with a bit of the glaze chipped away from it. See photo. ** A crack at the lip that extends about 5-6" down. Gently tapping on the piece emits a strong, hollow sound. If the crack was deep enough to be deemed as 'damaged', the sound would have been thin and tinny. All else is perfect! The glaze is silky and bright. The intended use of this piece was to serve as a pedestal for a matching jardinere but, although I am still sorting, I have not yet come across any. Still, this piece is suitable for use as an umbrella stand, a vase for dried arrangements, or even live/fresh cut bouquets as it does hold water. Carefully packaged weight: 18 lbs.
