She was launched on 30 June 1942 sponsored by Mrs. Frederick G. Crisp, wife of Rear Admiral Frederick G. Crisp, Manager of the Mare Island Navy Yard, and commissioned on 1 September 1942 with Lieutenant Commander Elton Watters Grenfell in command.
