Navis USS Raleigh CL-7 wearing US Navy camouflage measure 32/1D at Massacre Bay Attu in the Aleutian Islands May 1942. Commissioned February 6th 1924 as one of the Omaha Class light cruisers built from lessons learned from World War One. Displacing 9,661 tons she was 555.5 feet long with a slender 55 foot beam and a speed of 35 knots. By the start of the second World War on 12/7/41 she had two of her 6" guns removed and by 1944 she was armed with 10 X 6", 8 X 3". 12 X 40 mm and 8 X 20 mm guns two observation aircraft on two beam catapults and 6 X 21" torpedo tubes and could also deploy 224 sea mines. At the beginning of the war while moored on the far side of Ford Island Hawaii ahead of the old Battleship Utah ,the Raleigh was torpedoed by Imperial Japanese Aircraft. After repaired were complete she served most of the war in the Cold Aleutian chain of Islands pushing back against Japanese invasion forces.Winner pays actual 1st class postage .
