Monumental Architectural Stoneware Pot by Eric NorstadDescription and Item InformationUp for sale is this huge, modernist studio art pottery jar, planter, vase, or jardiniere by the listed artist, Eric Norstad. Please excuse the glare in the photos. This piece measures approximately 19 inches tall by 21 inches long (across the handles) by 18 1/2 inches wide (base and rim diameter). Unpacked, it weighs about 60 pounds. This piece has abstract, glazed decoration. This would be a fine addition to a collection of American studio ceramics.IdentificationThis pot is signed and beneath, "Norstad '75." It is also marked with a chop mark to its lower side. It is by the Oregon and California potter, Eric Norstad (1924-2013). Per the Vasefinder online museum, Norstad was a student of Victoria Avakian Ross at the University of Oregon. He produced functional pottery at his Corte Madera, California studio. He exhibited at the Nationals during the 1950s and 1960s. Per Wikipedia, Norstad started making stoneware pottery while he was an aspiring architect. His earliest pieces were functional kitchen items. In 1960, he began working as an architect in Tiburon, California. Norstad continued producing pottery as a side venture. He was commissioned by his architectural firm and others to produce large scale pieces, including planters, fireplace fronts, and murals. In 1962, he left the firm to open his own pottery studio. In 1975, production moved to a large studio in Sausalito. Norstad stated his influences to be Peter Voulkos, Bernard Leach, his artist parents, and 1930s through 1950s Scandinavian design. More interesting information can be found on Wikipedia.ConditionThis piece looks very good overall, with no chips or cracks. It has light wear overall, and wear to the base where it rests. To the lower interior, there is some hard water staining. There is fine glaze crazing. Variations in glazing are as made.
