In the early 1970's,a Mexican railroad worker from Mata Ortiz, named Juan Quezada, began a revival by developing his ownmethod of reproducing pottery from shards. Today, Juan's pots are in the permanent collections ofthe Smithsonian, and he is the foremost living ceramic artist in Mexico.By the 1990's, Juan's family and other households in his home village, Mata Ortiz, now follow his path ineach individual's style. The pots are built, designed and polished by hand from local clay and materials.Mata Ortiz pots are distinguished in location from Pueblo pots by the Mexico/United States border.However, all of the ancient designs were similarly inspired by water, the sky and nature; those thingsimportant to life.The shapes are remarkably balanced, often on a tiny base like this one!
